Joseph Arthur at the Troubadour
Yeah. Not only is he a tall drink of water, he's quite the songwriter too.
My friend and I got to see Joseph ("Joe" as all the people their who seemed to know him really well called him) up close and personal this past Tuesday night. It was a late night.
The first band, Y, consisted of the guys who were doing the filming for Joseph and band. They were not my favorite.
Joan as Police Woman, featuring Joan Wasser was quite good. She performed solo on Rhodes and electric guitar. She reminded me of a white Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday, but with P.J. Harvey-like sensibilites. She was pretty good. She also played violin with Joseph when he came out.
Joseph's set was good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoy some of his cds. I LOVED what he did with loops. There were moments were it went on for too long. This could have been because my feet were so very tired and I had worked all day.
Ok. Wait. My personal highlight was the song before the encore, You've Been Loved. I think that's the title. It was gorgeous. He looped background vocals that made a nice wall of harmony over a looped bar of guitar chords.
"God bless you guys, good night". Then he left the stage, loop still playing. It was a lovely moment and made the soreness in my feet less sucky.
I will post a picture as soon as my digital-camera-wielding friend sends me pics.
I highly recommend you purchase Joe's best album, Redemption's Son
